Running for Office

Those interested in running for an open Mayor or City Council seat must reside within City limits, be registered to vote in City elections and obtain and return the required nomination paperwork to be listed on the ballot. Below are important dates for the upcoming election.

Election Information

Ridgecrest is a General Law City governed by a five-member City Council with an elected Mayor. Term of office for Mayor is every two years. Terms of office for City Council Members are four years and are staggered with two members elected at one election and two the next.

The City of Ridgecrest consolidates with Kern County for all municipal elections. The Ridgecrest City Clerk serves as the election officer and is responsible for all candidates’ filings, the issuance and acceptance of nomination papers, City measures and publications of all legal notices as well as campaign and conflict of interest filings required by the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Campaign Information

Due to the impacts of COVID-19 the process for obtaining nomination papers has changed. Those interested in becoming a candidate to run for Mayor or City Council will need to contact the City Clerk and make an appointment in order to obtain nomination papers. The City Clerk can be reached at (760) 499-5002 or via email at rcharlon@ridgecrest-ca.gov starting July 7th to schedule an appointment. The regular nomination period for Mayor and Council Member candidates for the next election will begin July 13th and will run through August 6th.
